"Tolls guarantee financing for roads", considers Deputy Minister of Public Works

Government believes that the toll construction program underway in most southern African countries can prevent the collapse of traditional systems of financing road and bridge maintenance based on fuel taxes.

The deputy minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Cecilia Chamutota, said on Thursday during the meeting of the Southern African focus group of the Association of African Road Maintenance Funds, which runs until Saturday in the city of Maputo, that the implementation of tolls is a viable way for developing countries to maintain their road network in condition.

For the vice-minister the lack of financial resources for road rehabilitation and maintenance, combined with the damage that is caused as a result of natural disasters, has a negative impact on the development of the economy.
