At the global level about 2 trillion dollars is the value that the tourism sector will have lost by 2021, according to data from the World Tourism Organization, WTO.
In a survey, presented this Monday, the World Tourism Organization, WTO, reveals that the sector's recovery is "fragile" and "slow".
Despite recent improvements, travel flow continues to be affected by uneven vaccination rates between countries and new variants of Covid-19, which create more travel restrictions.
The sector is also being affected by rising fuel prices. According to the WTO, international tourist arrivals in 2021 remain 75% lower than the rates recorded in 2019, before the pandemic.
Zurab Pololikashvili, The Secretary General of the WTO says the third quarter 2021 data are "encouraging," but at the same time "results among different regions of the globe remain uneven."
According to him, the increase in cases and the emergence of yet another variant, it is still "not the time to let down our guard," but "continue the effort to ensure equal access to vaccines, coordinate travel procedures, use digital vaccination certificates to facilitate the movement of people, and support the" tourism sector.
