Government wants to allocate funds for sovereign insurance against natural disasters

The president of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD), Luísa Meque, said recently that the country has already taken significant steps towards establishing a sovereign fund against natural disasters.

According to the head of INGD, the contracting of sovereign insurance against natural disasters is underway at the Ministry of Finance.

Luísa Meque believes that this insurance would help, because the government has been allocating 0.01% (about 320 million meticais) to attend to disasters in the country, namely the monitoring and pre-positioning phase of relief goods.

"Every rainy season we already have a perspective for the implementation of sovereign insurance. This has been our contribution as a government to disaster risk reduction actions and we have shown our partners that we have a commitment as a country," she said.
