UN pledges continued support for Cabo Delgado's reconstruction plan

The United Nations Organization (UNO) ensures that it will continue to provide humanitarian and development support in the implementation of the reconstruction plan of the districts affected by terrorism in the north of Cabo Delgado province.

The assurance was given by the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Mozambique, Myrta Kaulard, who stressed that reconstruction must be brief to allow people to return to their places of origin safely.

"It's important that people come back and have basic services and presence of the civil administration so that they can afford to be self-sustaining," said Myrta Kaulard, who was speaking this week in Maputo in the context of the UN's 76th anniversary celebrations.

Besides the support in the reconstruction program, the United Nations representative pointed out the existence of a plan to be presented after the signing, next November, of the new cooperation framework between her office and the Government of Mozambique, for the period 2022/2023.

Within this framework, the main theme is resilience and peace. To achieve this, Myrta Kaulard indicated that key elements have been identified, namely gender equity, climate resilience, sustainable use of natural resources, economic diversification, transparent governance, human rights, and inclusion.

"These are the areas where we are working with the institutions, but we still have to sign this agreement that will complement the humanitarian part of the UN and the peace dialogue part that is being led by the UN Secretary General's special envoy to Mozambique, Mirko Mazoni," he pointed out.

He also stressed that, in this plan, the global organization will continue to support civil society institutions to promote the well-being of all Mozambicans, particularly the most vulnerable people.

The emergency plan, budgeted at about 300 million U.S. dollars, aims to create conditions for reconstruction and ensure the normal functioning of the recovered districts, namely, Mocímboa da Praia, Muidumbe, Quissanga, Nangade, Macomia and Palma.
