The US State Department said that the humanitarian aid provided to Mozambique will help 20,000 families with basic necessities and provide $700,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

According to a statement issued Thursday, the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration will provide $700,000 in humanitarian aid to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Mozambique this fiscal year.

The monetary and material support will be used for "providing shelter, blankets and mattresses, as well as psychosocial and mental health support, to many of the 28,000 newly displaced following the attacks on Palma," the United States reports.

According to the statement, US aid is visible through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), with "vital basic necessities" such as two thousand rolls of plastic sheeting, eight thousand prefabricated shelters ("shelter kits"), blankets, and cooking utensils that will be provided to some 20,000 displaced families.

The State Department maintains that "this aid follows on the heels of more than $82 million in humanitarian aid that the United States provided for the crisis response in Mozambique in fiscal year 2020, including in Cabo Delgado."

"The aid provided in fiscal year 2020 consisted of food, household products, shelter and hygiene 'kits' for about 250,000 displaced Mozambicans in Cabo Delgado and the neighboring provinces of Nampula and Niassa," the document adds.

The support is being provided in collaboration with the Government of Mozambique, international organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector, and makes the United States the "largest single donor of humanitarian aid in Mozambique," the statement said.

"The United States is committed to helping the Government of Mozambique combat terrorism and violent extremism with a comprehensive strategy that includes socioeconomic development, community resilience programs, and security assistance," the State Department concludes.
