Can Venâncio Mondlane "force" a second round in Wednesday's elections?

Venâncio Mondlane pode “forçar” segunda volta nas eleições de quarta-feira?

Tomorrow, Mozambique will choose the new President of the Republic to replace the current one, who has been in power for the last 10 years.

In these elections, a candidate has emerged who could change the usual scenario of abstentions. He is Venâncio Mondlane, an independent candidate supported by the Podemos party.

An article published by Zitamar notes that Mondlane has capitalized on the range of voters who usually abstain from voting and the new generation. This suggests a massive turnout of voters.

According to the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), more than 17 million voters are expected to vote, of which more than 16 million are in the country and the rest in the diaspora.

"The possibility of a high turnout in Wednesday's presidential elections in Mozambique, reversing recent trends in favor of independent candidate Venâncio Mondlane, could lead to a second round in the presidential race, something that has never happened in Mozambique since 1994, the year of the country's first multiparty elections," reads the portal.

To do this, the independent candidate will have to capitalize on the people's feelings of frustration at the management of the outgoing administration, as well as the votes of those who have disaffiliated from the largest opposition party.

To prevent the leading presidential candidate from reaching 50% plus one votes in the first round of voting, Mondlane would need Renamo leader Ossufo Momade to get a good vote, and supporters of Lutero Simango of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), who ran a solid and sober campaign, to stick with his candidate rather than vote for Chapo to avoid the feeling of wasting their vote, writes the Zitamar.

portal also notes that "Chapo is widely seen as the favorite, not because his campaign was brilliant, but because Frelimo was by far the most powerful machine during the 44 days of the official campaign period. There is also growing evidence that the electoral authorities are manipulating the arrangements for the election and preparing to rig the vote in favor of Frelimo".
