Venâncio Mondlane denies millionaire harassment to obstruct the "revolutionary cause"

Venâncio Mondlane desmente assédio milionário para obstruir a “causa revolucionária”

The head of the Renamo party's list in Maputo city, Venâncio Mondlane, says he has not received any attempt at a millionaire bribe to give up the quest to restore electoral truth in the municipality.

Speaking to MZNews, Mondlane, who is leading a series of peaceful marches in the city of Maputo, said that the information circulating on social media about the alleged receipt of an offer of five million dollars is completely false.

It was reported that some members of the Renamo party had been harassed with this proposal to abandon the demonstrations against electoral fraud. The list included Manuel de Araújo, head of the list and currently re-elected mayor of the city of Quelimane.

"Totally false. What I can say is this: my theory is that this information was not produced by our political opponents, but by supporters of the cause of the Revolution, as a deterrent technique. This is because such figures are unthinkable," said Mondlane.

In this context, moments after the Constitutional Council validated the election results on November 24, he stressed that his fight is for the people, not least because his financial life "has been planned for a long time".

On the other hand, explaining his statements about possible abandonment by the Renamo leadership and collusion of some members with the current system, he said that it was a case of misinterpretation, due to "noise" in the communication.

Following our last question, Mondlane claims to be Mozambique's most experienced politician at party level. He used to be a member of the Frelimo party, a member of parliament and head of the list for the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) in Maputo city, and is currently a member of parliament and head of the list for the Renamo party in the same municipality. The three parties are the only ones with parliamentary seats, with Frelimo holding the majority.

"On the day the CC results were announced, there was a lack of coordination and communication, which led me to make a comment to that effect on live TV, because we were all supposed to be with the people watching the results. In fact, there was a change of decision and the information didn't reach me in time that the other members wouldn't be present, this at local level," he said.

Given his flexibility in joining and moving between parties, we asked him if he was considering joining another party or even creating his own. He was short and to the point: "I don't have anything to say about the party. The day I do, I will".
