Venâncio Mondlane calls for three-day demonstrations in capitals, ports and borders

Venâncio Mondlane convoca manifestações de três dias nas capitais, portos e fronteiras

This evening, the independent presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, called for a general strike, concentrated in all the country's provincial capitals, ports and borders, for three days, from Wednesday (13) to Friday (15).

According to the candidate supported by the Podemos party, this is the first stage of the fourth phase of peaceful demonstrations.

"After the first phase, we will indicate the measures for the second phase of the fourth stage," he warned.

He explained that the marches should focus on those points because that is where the businesses of those who "are destroying the nation, robbing and humiliating the people" are based.

He called on supporters of the movements to refrain from acts of vandalism of other people's property. He urged drivers of cargo trucks to stop traveling at protest signs. "Stop the car, turn it off, take the key out and go home, like they did in South Africa."

In an interview yesterday with CNN PortugalMondlane said that the fourth phase of the demonstrations would be painful for the Mozambican economy.

In the third phase of the demonstrations, which lasted seven days, the country's largest land border, Ressano Garcia, was closed for two days as a result of the demonstrations. The border connects Mozambique and South Africa.

The Tax Authority estimates losses of 1.5 million meticais a day with the closure of cross-border operations.

The Center for Public Integrity estimates that in ten days of demonstrations, the country lost 24.5 billion meticais, equivalent to two percent of its Gross Domestic Product.

The protests against the "fraudulent" election results began on October 21.
