Venâncio Mondlane calls for three days of national mourning for the martyrs of the protests

Venâncio Mondlane apela à observação de Luto Nacional de três dias pelos mártires dos protestos

The independent presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, today called for three days of "national mourning for the martyrs of the Paneladas revolution".

Mondlane, who has been the face of the protests against electoral fraud in Mozambique, said that this cycle runs from Wednesday (20) to Friday (22).

"It's not like 50 people die and a society remains unmoved and serene. We've lost 50 people shot by the authorities who were supposed to protect them. We must show solidarity with these families," he appealed.

He urged people to dress in black clothes, from the most ordinary garments to ribbons and gloves.

"You come up with some kind of black symbolism, but it has to show that we're in mourning," he explained.

Venâncio Mondlane said that those who died "died fighting like real heroes fighting for us".

On the other hand, he urged people not to take to the streets and march, "to show that we're not the ones who are vandalizing". But the idea is, during this period, to stay at home and play pots and pans at night. "Let's avoid long walks."

In fact, according to the candidate who has the support of the Podemos party, there are people infiltrating the demonstration groups. He said that they are the real promoters of disorder and looting of public and other people's property. He stressed that his marches were peaceful.

In the meantime, it has called for a halt to the circulation of vehicles from 12 noon until 12.15 p.m. and honking until 1 p.m. throughout the country. Wherever the cars are, they are invited to jam the roads.

"Everyone who has programs between noon and 3pm should do them earlier. At 12 noon, all the vehicles will stop in the middle of the cities, towns and administrative posts. Let's honk our horns in honor of our heroes of the pot revolution," he said.

He suggested that those who don't have vehicles put up posters at traffic lights and in the middle of the streets. "As the cars will be stationary, we can also put up posters in the middle of the roads from 12 noon until 12.15 p.m."
