The head of the Renamo party's Maputo City list today accused the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Verónica Macamo, of urging the international diplomatic corps in Mozambique to meddle in the country's political and electoral affairs.
He made the accusation after a meeting with some ambassadors, representatives and international organizations accredited to Mozambique.
"The diplomatic corps had been invited by the Minister for Foreign Affairs to a meeting in which one of the issues was the exhortation for diplomats not to get involved in the country's political-electoral issues," Mondlane revealed.
He said it was an attempt at intimidation, "which reflects a primitive and primitive view of democracy".
At the meeting between Renamo and the diplomats, the reasons for the parallel count and the announcement of the voting results by Renamo before the competent bodies were presented and debated; Renamo's package of challenges to the election results announced and validated by the Constitutional Council; and listening to the diplomats' perceptions of the local elections.
Renamo was recommended to make an effort to make it possible to implement a set of recommendations that have not been complied with by the parties with parliamentary seats for more than 20 years and to make concrete proposals and laws.
But it was also recommended that the electoral management bodies be professionalized and reformed to ensure greater transparency in the processes.
