The European Union (EU) welcomes the meeting between the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, and the former presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, on March 23, and stresses that it is a positive step towards reconciliation in Mozambique.

"The EU encourages all political actors in Mozambique to pursue a productive dialogue leading to the restoration of trust in public institutions and the implementation of urgent reforms that meet the aspirations of the Mozambican people: democratic governance, respect for human rights, sustainable development and a prosperous economy whose benefits all Mozambicans can share," reads an EU publication.

The group of European countries stresses that it is ready to support this dialogue, as well as the implementation of the reforms agreed between the Mozambican players.

The meeting between Chapo and Mondlane, according to the latter, culminated in a consensus to put an end to the violence between the population and the police, assistance for the victims of police violence during the demonstrations, financial and psychological assistance for the bereaved families and a pardon for people detained at the time in full exercise of their rights and freedoms.
