Former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane has been detained at Luanda Airport, in Angola, since the morning of February 4.This Thursday, where you should attend tomorrowã, of the Meeting for Democracy, promoted by opposition parties in the region.
Other leaders are in the same situation, including the former presidents of Botswana and Colombia, Ian Seretse Khama and Andres Pastrana, respectively, who were also invited to the meeting. In total, 13 guests have been detained.
Curiously, the President of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), Lutero Simango, was on the same flight as Mondlane, but the Angolan migration authorities allowed him to enter the country. Simango is also one of the guests.
According to the portal EvidenceThe Angolan government, which cites sources close to Venâncio Mondlane, is said to be complying with a request made by the Frelimo party to prevent Mondlane from entering Angolan territory.
But there is also the suspicion that this is an action by the MPLA, Angola's ruling party, to sabotage the commemoration of the 59th anniversary of UNITA, the country's largest opposition party.
The meeting for democracy is organized by the Benthrust Foundation and will take place tomorrow in Benguela, with several African leaders and opponents confirmed to be present.
Last week, Mondlane had a friendly meeting with Ian S. Khama in Botswana.
