A passenger carrier "cobrador de chapa" was killed by the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) on Wednesday in the city of Xai-xai, Gaza province, during protests against the poor performance of the traffic police.
According to the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), the passenger semi-collectives were opposed to the reactivation of a police checkpoint in an area known as "Pontinha".
"The hauliers say that the traffic checkpoints are used as extortion centers by the traffic police officers, so they have decided to stop their activities," writes the CDD.
The UIR's intervention was aimed at containing tempers, and to do so "they fired real bullets, one of which ended up hitting the young man who lost his life on the spot".
According to the source, at least five people were injured and an unidentified number of others were arbitrarily detained.
From October 19, 2024 to March 27, 2025, police violence led to the death of 364 people, according to the CDD.
