The Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation in Mozambique, Isabel Faria De Almeida, called on the Mozambican private sector to invest in off-grid energy. In her view this can help the country achieve the goal of ensuring access to energy for all citizens by 2030.
The idea was defended last Thursday during a debate on the new regulations for off-grid energy access in Mozambique.
For the official, the government will not be able to achieve the outlined goals only with public sector and donor investment, so, "private investors are badly needed."
The Executive approved, in September 2021, an off-grid energy access regulation, which provides greater clarity for all actors in the off-grid energy sector and ensures the necessary conditions for the private sector to develop its activities and protect its investments.
De Almeida also guaranteed that the European Union will support the Energy Regulatory Authority in defining tariffs to be applied to off-grid electrical connections.
For his part, Thierry Kühn, Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy, said he believed that "only with a regulatory instrument that allows competition, and with an innovative private sector, will it be possible to present sustainable and accessible energy solutions to all Mozambicans.
