Uber lets you book rides via WhatsApp

Uber Technologies recently announced that it plans to launch a feature that would allow users to book rides through WhatsApp's messaging service, which would help Uber tap into Meta Platforms' base of more than 500 million users.

"Now you will no longer need to download or use the Uber app. Everything from registering the user, booking a trip and getting a trip receipt will be managed within the WhatsApp chat interface," an Uber blog post can read.

This new feature will be available for the Indian market. Uber has been operating in India for the past eight years and is now available in 70 cities.

WhatsApp users can book a trip by messaging Uber's business account number, entering a barcode, or directly clicking a link to open an Uber WhatsApp chat.

Drivers will receive the same insurance protection code as those who book rides directly through the Uber app. The WhatsApp chat stream will inform the user about safety guidelines, including how to contact Uber in case of emergency.

The feature will initially be launched in Lucknow, the capital of India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, and then expanded to other locations by next year.

The service will be available in English, Uber said, adding that Indian languages will be included in the near future.
