Court closes Startimes for million dollar debt

The Judicial Court of Maputo City ordered, on Tuesday (08), the seizure of all movable and immovable assets belonging to Startimes Mozambique, one of the companies distributing digital television signal in the country.

Office supplies, the entire system needed to carry out the digital migration process, vehicles, real estate, and bank accounts are all confiscated.

"I order the seizure of Startimes' assets (...), namely, office supplies, desks, computers, chairs, printers, work files, vehicles, real estate, cash in balance and whatever is credited to the defendant's bank accounts (...)," writes our source citing an order issued by the Judicial Court of Maputo City.

The television signal sales company, a subsidiary of the Chinese company Startimes Software Technologies, has a debt of three million dollars with Development Distribution Services - DDS Mozambique, Lda.

According to a national portal, the debt is the result of an advisory contract that DDS provided to the Chinese firm during the tender that aimed to find the entity that would be responsible for implementing the migration process of broadcasting in the country.

Last year DDS reportedly filed an injunction, requesting the seizure of several assets "for an indefinite period of time."

The server that distributes Startimes' signal in Mozambique has been shut down, potentially leaving the company's customers without a television signal, as well as affecting the customers of the firm responsible for implementing the digital migration of Mozambican broadcasting (TMT), where Startimes holds the majority of shares.
