Toyota will introduce high-performance solid-state batteries, among other technologies, with the aim of improving the autonomy of electric vehicles and also reducing their future costs.
The information was released by the Japanese manufacturer on Tuesday (13), the day before its annual meeting with shareholders.
As a result, this announcement boosted its shares by 5% to 2,173 yen, the biggest increase since August 2022.
Toyota has announced that it intends to launch next-generation lithium-ion batteries from 2026, which will be designed to offer longer ranges and faster charging than the current generation.
The manufacturer also announced a "technological breakthrough" focusing on the durability problems of solid-state batteries and said that it is developing the means to mass-produce these batteries, with a view to marketing them between 2027 and 2028.
The company also said it would produce an electric vehicle with a more efficient lithium-ion battery capable of offering a range of 1,000 kilometers. This is a significant advance when you consider that the world's best-selling EV, the Tesla Model Y, is powered by lithium-ion and has a range of around 530 km.
According to Toyota, an EV powered by a solid-state battery would have a range of 1,200 km and take just 10 minutes to charge. The Tesla Supercharger network, on the other hand, offers the equivalent of a 321 km charge in 15 minutes.
However, so far, the Japanese manufacturer has not revealed any details about the estimated costs and investments for these plans. Let's remember that Toyota sold 8,584 EVs worldwide in April alone and almost 10.5 million cars by 2022. (pplware)
