TotalEnergies welcomes investigations in Mozambique into military abuses against civilians

The French oil company, TotalEnergies, recently sent a message of satisfaction the start of investigations in Mozambique into human rights abuses and violations against civilians, allegedly perpetrated by Mozambican military personnel near the oil company's facilities in the district of Palma, Cabo Delgado province.

The complaint about abuses against civilians was made by the newspaper Politics last year, and the oil company subsequently requested investigations by the Mozambican authorities.

The Public Prosecutor's Office, through the Attorney General's Office, announced the investigationThe CEO of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, in his meeting with the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, in January, "emphasized the importance of it being conducted in accordance with the rule of law and the sovereignty of the Mozambican state".

In a statement, the firm also expressed its satisfaction with the independent investigation announced by the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) on the same subject, in response to the company's request in February of this year.

"... it is important to inform you that the CNDH recognizes the relevance and urgency of the case related to the Mozambique LNG Project and the need for a thorough and detailed investigation into these allegations," reads the CNDH's response letter to the CEO of TotalEnergies.

"The Commission reaffirms its commitment to rigorously following all legal procedures, ensuring that the investigation is conducted in a fair, impartial, objective and effective manner," says the CNDH.

The same case is being investigated internationally at the request of the Dutch authoritiesaccording to Dutch Finance Minister Eelco Heinen.

On the other hand, in France, TotalEnergies is being investigated about having refused support/denied aid to employees of subcontracted companies during a terrorist attack that resulted in deaths, injuries and displacement, in 2021.
