At least 13 children died in 2024 in Tete province, victims of acute malnutrition, a reduction compared to the 2023 scenario, health authorities announced today..
"We registered 13 deaths [in 2024] in hospitalization compared to 16 in the same period in 2023, which represents a reduction of 37.9%," said the provincial director of health in Tete, Alex Bertil, during the opening of the annual provincial meeting of the nutrition program.
According to the official quoted by Radio MozambiqueIn 2023, around 10,400 children with malnutrition were diagnosed and treated in the province's health units, compared to around 7,800 in 2023.
The provincial health director in Tete also explained that the cases have a higher incidence in the districts of Mutarara, Doa Chiúta, Moatize and Zumbo, pointing to actions to curb the increase in cases.
"We continue to promote nutritional education and cooking demonstration sessions at community level and in health units. We continue to promote screening for early detection of cases of malnutrition and provide vitamin A supplementation to children aged between 6 and 59 months," added Alex Bertil.
In September 2024, the United Nations (UN) said that nearly two million people were in need of humanitarian assistance.
