The Mozambique Armed Forces (FADM) and Rwandan forces are on the trail of terrorists who may be refugees in Nampula province.
According to The New TimesIn Rwanda, between April 26 and May 3, joint troops shot down several terrorists, with only a few remaining, during clashes in the dense forests of Odinepa, Nasua, Mitaka and Manika, in the district of Eráti, Nampula province.
"Only a few insurgents managed to escape across the Lúrio River," reads the publication, which quotes a Rwandan defense document.
The article states that the troops of the two countries will have to redesign their counter-terrorism strategies in view of the withdrawal of troops from the Southern African Development Community (SAMIM). The idea is that "terrorists do not carry out attacks in the areas left by the SADC military or try to occupy territory".
According to Brigadier General Ronald Rwivanga, spokesman for the Rwandan forces, quoted by the portal, the terrorists may have been staying in the Nampula bush since they were dislodged from the Catupa bush, in Macomia district, Cabo Delgado province, last year.
"The insurgents operate in small groups in these forested areas. They also hide on small islands along the Lurio River. There have been several dozen victims of the terrorists. Large stockpiles of weapons were left behind, but some victims were taken by the fleeing insurgents to the other side of the river, in Nampula province," he said.
