In Mozambique, more than 2,000 people have left their home areas due to the actions of terrorists in the north of the country and natural phenomena such as cyclones Idai and Kenneth.
"Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, recorded in 2019, caused the displacement of approximately 500,000 people. During the peak of the terrorist attacks perpetrated by the insurgents in the northern zone, the country saw the displacement of 1,400,000 people," said Luísa Meque, the President of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD).
In particular, she said, around 600,000 of those forced to leave their homes because of the terrorist actions have returned to their original areas.
Meque was speaking today at the launch of the Internally Displaced Persons Action Plan, drawn up by the government and cooperation partners, the aim of which, he explained, is to reduce the risk of displacement due to natural or human causes. But also, the instrument approved by the executive proposes to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims of the circumstances.
With the approval of the Policy and Strategy for the Management of Internally Displaced Persons, the executive intends to take coordinated action to assist displaced persons.
Meque explained that the instrument aims to "identify actions to reduce the risk of displacement, with an emphasis on mapping and assessing the risk of displacement, encouraging the voluntary withdrawal of people at high risk and strengthening warning systems".
