Sofala: Anti-corruption office requests list of schools that collect payment from guards

Sofala: Gabinete de combate à corrupção solicita lista das escolas que efectuam cobranças para o pagamento de guardas

The Sofala Provincial Office for Combating Corruption (GPCCS) has asked the Sofala Provincial Directorate of Education to provide a list of all the schools that have been charging guards in the city of Beira.

According to the document cited by Letter from MozambiqueOn March 13, 2025, the GPCCS asked for the information to be delivered within five days, in order to speed up the process.

The note clarifies that the information was requested under the terms of an ongoing process under the provisions of article 7 of Law no. 1/2022, of January 12. In the document, the GPCCS also requests the legal diploma that provides for the collection of amounts from pupils and guardians for the payment of guards in public schools.

Collections for the payment of guards are happening all over the country. In several cases, pupils from various schools are prevented from attending classes at the beginning of each school year, allegedly because their parents and guardians have not paid the fee. However, the Ministry of Education and Culture has always assumed that it was aware of the fee, but that it was not compulsory.
