Civil society holds parties responsible for illegal campaigning in the elections

Sociedade civil responsabiliza partidos pelos ilícitos na campanha para as eleições

The DECIDE Platform, a civil society organization, is concerned about the electoral illegalities that are taking place in the campaign for the general elections on October 9. On the other hand, this Mozambican electoral observation organization points to the political parties as the main culprits in this situation.

Taking stock of the first 25 days of the electoral campaign, the coordinator and activist of the DECIDE Platform, Wilker Dias, raised concerns about the process of hunting for votes, citing in particular the involvement of children in this process. These complaints had already been made by other civil society organizations during the campaign.

"We have seen illicit activities throughout this process, we have provinces that are champions in illicit activities, the use of state assets for electoral campaign purposes, but also the rate of violence, as we can list, the province of Nampula which has been one of the epicenters for all these aspects," said activist Wilker Dias, in a publication of the Radio France International (RFI).

In the same publication, Wilker Dias pointed the finger of blame at what is happening, in an electoral campaign process in which the actions of the police have been, in his opinion, unparalleled.

"There is sometimes a slight lack of training internally on the part of the political parties to be able to deal with these problems that we have seen year after year. We see a police force with exemplary behavior. Always present at marches, always present in situations where they are called upon, even to avoid some conflicts," said the coordinator of the DECIDE Platform.

The electoral campaign, which began on August 24, runs until October 6. Three days later, on October 9, more than 17 million voters will be called to the polls to elect the President of the Republic, provincial governors and deputies to the Assembly of the Republic.
