Albino José Sibia, better known as "Shottas", 30, was murdered on Sunday in the village of Ressano Garcia, Maputo province, by an agent from the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR). On that day, the trucks of the Carlos Mesquita Transportation group were due to pass through.
The young man was shot in the back while broadcasting live on Facebook. He was broadcasting the police action against the demonstrators. The UIR used tear gas and lethal bullets to disperse the population near the Ressano Garcia border crossing.
"I've been shot, guys. I'm dying," were the young man's last words before he was taken to Moamba hospital, where he died hours later. On the same day, the police wounded eight people.
The funeral ceremonies for the young blogger will take place today at the Ressano Garcia cemetery.
"Faced with yet another barbaric and cowardly act by the PRM, the CDD is going to take legal action against the state for the actions of its agents. The CDD will fight to the end for justice for "Shottas" and his family. This barbaric and cowardly act must not go unpunished," reads the Bulletin of the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD).
After all, according to CDD, the UIR was deployed from Maputo to the border to secure the entry of trucks belonging to the Carlos Mesquita Transportation group, which belongs to the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Carlos Mesquita.
"The trucks were transporting chrome to the Port of Maputo. For more than two months, the transportation of chrome has been banned following a dispute between the residents of the village and the Mozambique Railways terminal in Ressano Garcia. The residents, who say they commissioned a study, claim that chrome is responsible for environmental pollution, including the water of the Incomati river which supplies the town. So, when they became aware of the trucks carrying chrome, they blocked the road. According to our sources, the local police, who are aware of the dispute, did not intervene. To unblock the traffic, three or four Mahindra vehicles loaded with UIR agents were sent from Maputo. It was this group of agents who killed "Shottas", reveals the CDD.
