People living near the border of Ressano Garcia, in Maputo province, yesterday stormed a warehouse of products seized by Mozambique Customs, in an area known as Km 4.
Residents have seized various goods, including those loaded onto trucks from South Africa.
In addition, last night people burned to the ground a truck carrying fish from South Africa; nine Mozambique Customs vehicles; the residence of the head of the Ressano Garcia Post, the residence of the agents of the Provincial Customs Service and three Customs offices that process cars from South Africa.
The population justifies the rise in tempers with the murder of a young man by customs agents during peaceful demonstrations, but also for the restoration of the electoral truth.
On the other hand, they claim that Customs leaves seized products to rot when they could be donated to the starving population.
According to the Head of the Ressano Garcia Post, Ezaldo Chachuaio, activities have not yet resumed.
Juca Bata, the spokesman for Migration, said that a team had already been deployed to investigate the events.
The Ressano Garcia border is closed.
A joint Customs and Migration team is meeting to assess the situation. (Sources: Rádio Moçambique and STV)
