The largest opposition party in Mozambique, Renamo, will begin marches across the country today in repudiation of the results of the sixth local elections on October 11, 2023.
It should be remembered that according to the interim data provided by the bodies responsible for publishing the official election results, the Renamo party did not win in any of the country's municipalities. The Renamo party only recognizes the results of the parallel count that give it victory in several municipalities in the country, Maputo, Matola, Vilankulo, Quelimane, Chiúre, among others.
The demonstration was recently called by the party's president, Ossufo Momade, in the city of Maputo. In other situations, he has also warned that if the fabricated results prevail, there could be social upheaval. He also noted that despite having handed in their weapons, there are still cards to play to oppose political injustice.
"What I want is a national demonstration, not war," said the Renamo leader on Sunday.
The marches are due to start across the country from 8.30 a.m. in Praça dos Combatentes (Xiquelene), where Venâncio Mondlane, Renamo's frontrunner for Maputo city council, along with hundreds of young people, held protests in the rain on Monday.
