Rare pink diamond discovered in Botswana

It is one of the largest pink diamond specimens discovered in the world with 62.7 carats, which also has the particularity of being one of the rarest types of diamond.

The discovery was announced by the Canadian company Lucara Diamond which owns the Karowe mine in this African country. The stone is named "Boitumelo", which means "joy" in the local Setswana language.

This diamond "represents the largest pink diamond discovered in Botswana and one of the largest pink diamonds in the world," the company said in a statement.

The diamond is 26x17x16 millimeters and is described by the company as a "high quality" gem in "elegant pink color."

On July 8, Lucara had also announced the discovery of a 1,174-carat diamond in this same mine, according to "CNN."

The discovery drew attention because of the large size of the stone, being the third of more than 1,000 carats to be discovered in the mine.

The African country has been prodigal in the discovery of large stones. Earlier, in June, a diamond with 1 098 carats was also discovered in Botswana.
