A 17-year-old teenager is facing police authorities in the city of Xai-xai, in Gaza province, after stealing a newborn baby.
The case took place at the Xai-xai Provincial Hospital, where, after bumping into the baby's mother in a queue, the accused was entrusted with the baby for a few minutes. It was then that she disappeared with the newborn.
However, when she arrived home with the baby, her relatives and the community rejected the theft and advised her to return the newborn, which she did.
She told journalists that she was pregnant, but unfortunately had a miscarriage. She said that her boyfriend was unaware of the situation and chose to steal the baby.
"I don't know how I came to think that either," he said.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique also say that the arrest of the young woman was possible thanks to the tracing of the number used to buy the hospital ticket. The suspect was located at a public transport stop, where she allegedly intended to return the newborn after the community's negative reaction.
