Putin approves defense budget until 2027. It will drain 127 billion in 2025 alone

Putin aprova verba para a Defesa até 2027. Vai drenar 127 mil milhões só em 2025

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law the State Budget for the next three years, which provides for unprecedented investment in defense. It amounts to around 127 billion euros by 2025, which is a third of the total budget.

The decree promulgating the three-year Russian state budget was published this Sunday on the official legal information portal.

The Russian Budget for 2025 foresees defense spending of 13.5 trillion rubles (almost 127 billion euros) - which represents 32.5% of total government spending. This is an increase of 24.4 percent (three trillion rubles) on the previous record for national defense investment set this year.

The amount dedicated to defense and national security is greater than the budget allocated to education, health, the economy and social policy combined.

The new budget foresees a slight reduction in military spending in 2026 and 2027, according to the document approved in November by both houses of the Russian parliament.

The record investment in defense comes at a time when the war in Ukraine has entered a new phase, after Vladimir Putin attacked a Ukrainian city with a new hypersonic ballistic missile.

Last Friday, the Russian president even threatened, for the first time, to attack "decision centers" in the Ukrainian capital using this new weapon - the Oreshnik ballistic missiles.

Putin says this is the response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil with US long-range missiles. (Text: RTP)
