The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), in Nampula province, arrested 34 supporters of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), allegedly for setting fire to houses and tires on public roads, restricting the movement of people and goods during the demonstration called by the presidential candidate supported by the respective party, Venâncio Mondlane..
In a publication on the local portal Ikweli, the head of the PRM's Public Relations Department in Nampula, Dércio Samuel, said that the arrests took place in the districts of Nacala, Mogovolas, Angoche and Murrupula. "In the aftermath, nine people sustained minor injuries, two PRM officers were also injured and seven houses were destroyed," said Dércio Samuel.
The source also explained that, in addition to setting fire to houses and tires on public roads, protesters seized goods from stores, while other groups raided the homes of police officers and threatened their families with death.
Finally, Dércio Samuel Samuel called on young people not to vandalize homes or loot property when they take part in demonstrations.
