The Kenmare mining company, located in Moma district, Nampula province, is preparing a project to build a tailings retention dam, transfer channel and road detour for the Nataka heavy sands deposit.
According to a NewsTo this end, the company is holding the fourth round of public consultation meetings for the resettlement of five communities.
The Nataka Heavy Sands mine has the capacity to produce around 1.2 million tons of ilmenite per year, including associated by-products of rutile and zircon.
Kenmare, which is Irish and operates in Mozambique through subsidiaries in Mauritius, previously announced that it would pay 1.92 billion meticais in 2023 to the state in fees and taxes.
It is one of the world's largest producers of mineral sands, listed on the London and Dublin stock exchanges, and production in Mozambique accounts for approximately 7% of global titanium raw materials.
