Teachers at Iapala secondary school, in the Malema district of Nampula, and Gurué secondary school, in Zambézia province, have announced a strike starting this Monday (24), in protest at the non-payment of overtime for the years 2023 and 2024.
The movement comes after the government promised to pay for hours worked, a measure that was announced shortly after the new government took office, but which has not been complied with uniformly in schools.
According to the teachers quoted by Rigor newspaperHowever, "the government had guaranteed that the amounts would be paid, but so far many schools, especially in the provinces of Nampula and Zambézia, have still not received the payment due".
Although the strike movement was planned for the opening of the school year, the decision was temporarily postponed after the payment of some schools, which initially discouraged the strike. However, as payment has not been made in full, the strike will resume, with the aim of putting pressure on the government to fulfill its commitments.
The strike, which will directly affect the pupils of these schools, is generating apprehension among the educational community and parents, who fear that the quality of teaching will be compromised.
So far, there has been no official statement from the government authorities regarding the stoppage.
