On Sunday, the National Association of Teachers of Mozambique (ANAPRO) accused the government of lying about the stages of the payment of overtime arrears, and promised a new wave of strikes.
According to the President of ANAPRO, Isac Marengula, there are already schools where classes are at a standstill due to the lack of overtime payments for 2022. There are also schools where teachers have not even received overtime payments for 2021.
"One example," he added, "comes from the district of Alto Molocue, in Zambézia province, where the government has adopted a selective payment strategy. In some schools, out of a total of 30 teachers, only ten received their overtime payments."
ANAPRO categorically denies the government's claim that all overtime for 2022 has been paid. "That's not true - it's a lie!" declared Marrengula.
The government also claimed that it paid 50% of overtime from 2023, but Marrengula claimed that this was not true either.
"We wanted to ask the President of the Republic to tell us specifically what 'next week we're going to pay overtime' means, because it's the end of March and we haven't seen anything. The teachers are outraged," said teacher Marcos Mulima, quoted by NOAM.
According to the spokesman, if the situation prevails and there is no response from the government, the teachers will speak out next week, admitting that they will resume class-wide demonstrations and stoppages.
