Prosecutor's office investigates death of SERNIC agent and friend buried alive

Procuradoria investiga morte de agente do SERNIC e amigo enterrados vivos

Since Monday, the Maputo Provincial Prosecutor's Office has been on the trail of the perpetrators who last week tortured and buried alive two citizens, an agent of the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) and his friend, in the Ngolhoza district of Moamba.

The investigations began with some delay because on the day of the murders the Mozambique Republic Police were prevented by people from arriving at the scene of the crime, according to the provincial chief prosecutor, Evelina Gomane.

The bodies of the deceased were exhumed on Monday, and due to the advanced stage of degradation, the intervention of coroners was necessary for identification.

"The bodies were completely charred and difficult to identify. We then had to take them to forensic medicine for identification. So when we reach the level of not respecting the life of another human being, we leave all our commitment to life and humanity by the wayside," he lamented.

Witnesses are already being questioned and the Public Prosecutor's Office is gathering evidence in order to clarify the crime and hold those involved accountable.

"We're going to work with the data collected yesterday [Monday]... the case is uncertain, because we're dealing with a crime committed by a group of people, but it's still possible to identify one or other of the players and hold them responsible. Everything will depend on the elements collected in order to be able to respond to the offense," she explained, quoted by Rádio Moçambique.
