The spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Leonel Muchina, confirmed the kidnapping of businessman Muhammad Mayet, aged 45 and of Asian origin, this morning in Maputo city center.
He said that the PRM estimates that the citizen was kidnapped by six individuals according to the information gathered at the scene.
"Some of these individuals were carrying firearms, at least one of which was used to shoot one of the businessman's employees when he offered to help," he said, noting that he was out of danger and receiving treatment at a hospital.
The spokesman also said that it was not true that the kidnappers had used an AKM-type weapon with a police strap. He said that the casing found at the scene was a pistol-type weapon.
"This is the only data that leads us to say that the firearm used to carry out that action was a pistol, due to the size and specificity of the casing itself," he said.
Muchina, quoted by Success TVHe stressed that the PRM is aware of the concerns of this type of crime, which is why it works together with other forces focused on the management and security of people and their property.
In this regard, he assured that the PRM would be working with the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) to follow up on leads that could lead to the victim's rescue and the arrest of the perpetrators.
He appealed to the population to consider that some homes are used as captives for kidnapped people.
"It's important that we all become vigilant about this and report any strange movements because we could be facing captivity," he said. (Image: DR)
