May Day: Mozambican workers denounce poor working conditions

Primeiro de Maio: Trabalhadores moçambicanos denunciam más condições laborais

Three years on, workers took to the streets again on Monday in float parades to mark May 1st, lamenting the current situation of the working class in Mozambique.

According to the Mozambican workers' union, the new salaries approved by eight sectors of activity do not satisfy the working class.

Alexandre Munguambe, general secretary of the Workers' Organization of Mozambique (OTM), demonstrated his dissatisfaction with the minimum wages approved last week by the Council of Ministers.

"The salaries don't satisfy what is the gauge of people's social life, which is the basket that doesn't satisfy. The workers didn't expect these salaries that have now been approved. They expected even better wages," Munguambe said, quoted by RFI.

For the OTM general secretary, excessive working hours and poor working conditions add to the list of concerns.

Meanwhile, the Mozambican Association of People with Disabilities, through its president, Cantol Pondja, complained about exclusion from the job market and the lack of opportunities.

"There are many people who have been trained professionally, there are many people who have skills and abilities, but there is discrimination within institutions, both public and private, which are not creating the conditions for people with disabilities to benefit from equal opportunities," said Cantol Pondja.
