President of the Republic concerned about the wave of misinformation about the origin of cholera

Presidente da República preocupado com a onda de desinformação sobre a origem da cólera

The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, expressed his concern on Saturday (29) about the wave of misinformation about the origin of cholera, a disease that has already claimed 36 lives in the provinces of Nampula and Zambezia and infected more than 2,000 people..

Speaking at a rally in Nampula, Daniel Chapo said that cholera cannot be spread by a hospital or school.

The wave of misinformation about the origin of the disease has triggered acts of vandalism, with the destruction of property, harassment of community leaders and authorities, forcing the intervention of the security forces.

"No one is bringing cholera to Mozambique," reiterated Chapo, urging the population to improve hygiene habits, namely hand washing and cleaning the land around their homes.

"Let's wash our hands, so we don't catch cholera, clean up our yards, our neighborhoods, because we can't let the grass grow anyway," the Mozambican statesman continued, quoted by the RFI.

At the time, Nampula's Director of Education, William Tuzine, revealed that around 70 schools had been vandalized due to protests related to misinformation about a cholera outbreak in the province, in northern Mozambique, affecting more than a thousand pupils.

"We're talking about around 70 schools that were vandalized during this period, so we're talking about more than a thousand students who were affected by this issue of classroom vandalization," he said.
