Portugal is seeking a seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council and has formally launched a campaign under the slogan "Prevention, Partnership, Protection" for the 2027/28 biennium.
In fact, there are three mottos that the small European nation is taking to the UN, announced the Portuguese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, moments before the launch of the campaign in New York.
On the one hand, the idea of preventing and avoiding conflicts, through "preventive diplomacy", and building diplomatic bridges on all continents.
The election takes place in 2026, and Portugal will be up against Germany and Austria. There are only two seats available to the Western Europe and Other States group.
"I think Portugal has a good chance. In fact, they've proven in the past that they've faced very difficult opponents and managed to beat them," he said.
