Portugal ready to work with new Mozambican government and regrets episodes of violence

Portugal disponível para trabalhar com novo Governo moçambicano e lamenta episódios de violência

The Portuguese government is ready to work with the new Mozambican president and government to strengthen the strategic ties between the two countries, continuing the historic bonds of friendship between the two peoples..

In a statement released yesterday (23), shortly after the results were announced, Portugal began by saying that it had taken "note of the proclamation of the Constitutional Council of Mozambique on the conclusion of the electoral process, which indicates Daniel Chapo as President-elect".

"We reaffirm Portugal's will to remain a key partner, contributing to sustainable progress and peace in Mozambique. Portugal is, and wishes to continue to be, Mozambique's main partner in terms of international cooperation," says the note, deeply regretting "the episodes of violence that marked the post-election period in Mozambique," causing countless human losses and intensifying political and social tensions in the country.

For the Portuguese government, peace and social stability in Mozambique are invaluable values that must be safeguarded in the phase of political transition that is now beginning.

"We hope that the new cycle of government will reflect a commitment to inclusion, in a spirit of dialogue, capable of responding to the social, political and economic challenges facing the country. It is therefore essential that the new Mozambican authorities can begin as soon as possible an inclusive political debate with the opposition forces and representatives of civil society that will strengthen national cohesion, guarantee social stability and foster the progress and development of the Mozambican people," he concluded.
