A group of people destroyed a statue symbolizing the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, which had been erected at the Engenheiro Filipe Jacinto Nyusi Secondary School.

According to what we have learned, the act took place on Tuesday in Campoane, in the Boane district of Maputo province.

The motivations behind this act are still unknown.

Images of the act were circulated on social media.

The school was inaugurated on January 31, 2022, and coincided with the opening of the school year. It had been the largest school built in the country in the post-independence period.

The vandalization is taking place at a time of social tensions across the country, where the emphasis has been on rejecting electoral fraud in the October 9 general elections.
