Police recognize difficulty in clarifying kidnapping crimes in the country

Polícia reconhece dificuldade para esclarecer crimes de raptos no país

The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) recognizes that there are difficulties in preventing and clarifying the crimes of kidnapping and abduction that have plagued the country for more than a decade.

For example, the police authorities have yet to clear up three cases of kidnapping that took place in the country's first quarter, despite already having clues to do so.

According to the spokesman for the General Command of the PRM, Leonel Muchina, when a kidnapping case occurs or is confirmed, there is no doubt that there has been a failure in prevention.

"And when this happens, it's in the best interests of the police. We are public security managers and you can imagine that kidnappings are worrying, not only for the victims, for society, but also for the police. That's why every action is being taken, in a very energetic way, to clarify matters," he said, quoted by the The Country.

Muchina also said that he was working alongside the National Criminal Investigation Service, SERNIC, to prevent these and other types of crime.

On the other hand, he said that it was not appropriate to provide any more data, as the cases were still ongoing. "...but there is already concrete and relevant data being developed to clarify these kidnappings that we are mentioning."

The spokesman for the General Command of the PRM was speaking at the usual weekly briefing, and said that between March 22 and 29, the number of various criminal cases had fallen compared to last year.
