The city of Maputo woke up in the middle of a battle for access to the cement zone. The demonstrators tried to hold a peaceful march against electoral fraud, but were blocked on all sides with gunfire and tear gas.
According to a Moz ChannelThe largest number of demonstrators, including several women from Maxaquene and Polana Caniço, were joined by groups from Malhazine and Magoanine, among others. The march left Praça dos combatentes, aka Xiquelene, but when the demonstrators arrived near Praça da OMM they were met with gunfire from the defense and security forces.
At the Eduardo Mondlane statue in Alto Maé, the police and army have taken over the site so that no one can go near it. This was one of the places that had been announced as a sit-in.
"The forces that are now literally crushing the right to demonstrate are firing indiscriminately, including tear gas. The idea is to prevent the demonstrators from entering the city," reads the same publication.
The city's residents are "quartered" in their buildings in fear of the defense and security forces. Residents of the outlying neighborhoods are trying every way to get into the city. In response to the police charge, tire-burning has already begun in some areas.
