Police fire tear gas at protesters and riot

Polícia dispara gás lacrimogénio contra manifestantes e instala tumulto

The Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) fired tear gas at protesters this afternoon at the intersection of 25 de Setembro and Guerra Popular avenues, in the downtown area of Maputo, to disperse demonstrators.

According to reports and videos to which we have had access, chaos ensued when the police deliberately fired on the people who were peacefully singing the National Anthem.

The day in Maputo City was relatively calm until the UIR appeared.

That "popular meeting" took place during this period of protests at 3.30 p.m. as a sign of the opening of traffic, after eight hours of suspension, as part of the 4×4 demonstrations called by Venâncio Mondlane.

So far, we have had no information about human victims.

In retaliation for the police action, the demonstrators once again obstructed traffic on that stretch of road, throwing a garbage can into the middle of the junction, as well as throwing stones almost everywhere.
