Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, supported by PODEMOS (Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique) in the October 9 elections, has filed an appeal with the Constitutional Council (CC), the country's highest electoral law body, asking for the votes cast in Zimbabwe to be annulled, since 296,519 Zimbabwean citizens were illegally allowed to vote.
According to a document signed by Venâncio Mondlane's lawyer, Judite Simão, the election in the polling stations set up in Zimbabwe should be annulled, taking into account data from a report by the "High Commission of Human Rights Lawyers of Southern Africa Mozambique", which states that Zimbabwean citizens voted in the Mozambican elections.
"If there is willingness and interest in looking into the matter, steps can be taken with the Ministry of the Interior to ascertain whether or not the 296,519 voters are Mozambicans with dual nationality," reads the appeal, quoted by the AIM.
Remember that MZNews had already published on October 14, that a significant number of supporters of the Zimbabwean party, Zanu PF, including a former councillor, voted in Mozambique's General Elections.
According to DW, quoting the Zimbabwean newspaper "New Zimbabwe", former Zanu PF councillor Edison Manyawi surprisingly boasted that he had voted for Frelimo on camera, even though it was illegal.
"We're happy with what we've done because Mozambique is our neighbor and helped us during the liberation struggle, so we wouldn't hesitate to help them win the elections," said Manyawi.
