Interior Minister Paulo Chachine assures that there are no guidelines for police officers, in their various units, to use real bullets in their actions against the demonstrators.
The fatal shooting of demonstrators by the police has been taking place in Mozambique and the most recent case was that of a young man in Casa Branca, in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, on Tuesday (18). Meanwhile, Paulo Chachine considered that police officers act in strict compliance with the law, but believes that in cases of excess, they are subject to penalties.
"There were no orders to use real bullets during the demonstrations. When have real bullets been used? The police act within the limits and within the law, with the means necessary at that moment and for each action," he assured, quoted by RFI.
According to the minister, in proven cases of the use of real bullets, no agent will go unpunished. "Whenever and wherever there are excesses, the agents are always held responsible and each act, each fact and each moment is analyzed on a case-by-case basis and I believe that an analysis has been made. If there were excesses and if there was a fault, measures have been taken or will be taken," said the Interior Minister.
