Parliamentarians learn about the damage caused by Cyclone Freddy in Zambezia

Parlamentares inteiram-se dos danos causados pelo ciclone Freddy na Zambézia

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Esperança Bias, and a group of deputies from the Standing Committee are working in Zambezia province today and tomorrow.

The parliamentarians are going to Zambezia to find out about the damage caused by the floods and Cyclone Freddy.

Cyclone Freddy formed at the beginning of February in northern Australia and is now considered to be one of the longest-lasting tropical cyclones. In Mozambique, the cyclone hit Zambezia province hardest, causing deaths and a trail of destruction to various public and private infrastructures.

According to the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD), Cyclone Freddy caused 161 deaths in Mozambique.

Storm Freddy hit the coast of Zambezia on March 12, with its epicentre in the district of Namacurra, in the town of Macuze, with winds of 148 Km/h and gusts of up to 213 Km/h, and heavy rainfall of over 200mm, affecting the provinces of Zambezia, Sofala, Nampula and Manica.
