The President of the Republic and of the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (Frelimo), Filipe Jacinto Nyusi has been determining the country's destinies since 2014, when he held the nation's highest office, and in the wake of a re-election shrouded in rumors of fraud, in 2019.
This second mandate is already halfway through, and there are only a little over two years left before the next presidential elections. Given that, according to the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique, a Head of State cannot run for a third presidential term after two consecutive terms, behind the party's scenes names of possible successors to Filipe Jacinto Nyusi are already being considered.
After it was reported that the generals of Frelimo, the largest party in the country, are working for the respect of the Constitution of the Republic, avoiding a third mandate, now four names "with potential" have arrived to occupy the Red Point.

There are four men and one woman, and all have held ministerial positions (two became Prime Minister and one became Minister of the Interior), except the one who seems to be the least prepared for these questions of political governance, since his person seems never to have been actively in the meanderings of politics, except when proposed to disaffiliate from Frelimo to run as an independent in the last local elections on October 10, 2018, for the Youth Association for the Development of Mozambique - AJUDEM.
At the time, in an interview on a national television channel, Graça Machel, widow of Samora Moisés Machel, said that Frelimo had specific rules and treatment for those who disaffiliated from the party in those ways, and that the target should deal with the consequences of their actions.
According to a national portal, Luísa Diogo (former Minister of Planning and Finance and simultaneously former Prime Minister, in the governments of Joaquim Alberto Chissano and Armando Guebuza); Aires Bonifácio Ali (former Minister of Education and Culture and former Prime Minister, of Armando Guebuza in his first term), Jaime Basílio Monteiro (former Interior Minister); and Samora Machel Júnior are, so far, the possible proposals that Frelimo may put forward for Filipe Nyusi's succession.
The portal advances that some of these names already have structures to mobilize internal support. There is also a voice that puts forward a slogan for tribal support: "now it's the center's turn".
The election of the candidate for the 2024 presidencies is to take place in 2023.
