Bar Association predicts "bloodbath on Thursday" and calls for dialog between F. Nyusi and V. Mondlane Mondlane

Ordem dos Advogados prevê “banho de sangue na quinta-feira” e apela ao diálogo entre F.Nyusi e V. Mondlane

The Mozambican Bar Association (OAM) says that all the conditions are in place for the country to experience a bloodbath tomorrow, the final day of the third phase of the demonstrations.

"There is every chance that there will be a bloodbath tomorrow. And we, as a society, must not allow that. We believe that the time has come to call on the President of the Republic to convene the Council of State, in order to seek advice and open lines of dialog," said the President of the Portuguese Bar Association in Maputo today.

According to Carlos Martins, it is essential that, from now on, the whole of society takes part in the dialogue and can contribute to relaxing the social animosities that exist in the country.

In his view, the existing lines of dialogue, which call for the Constitutional Council to wait for the results to be announced, are not the best way to resolve the problem.

"We have been saying since the last local elections that the electoral management bodies, in this case the National Electoral Commission and the Constitutional Council itself, do not enjoy credibility," he noted.

According to Martins, the intended dialog must include presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane and the government. He said that any conditions set by Mondlane could not be ruled out.

"Therefore, in order to reach a solution, we must bring everything to the table. Nothing should be ruled out at this point," he said, noting the need for interlocutors who can bridge the gap.
