Frelimo opponents threatened with expulsion from neighborhood

Opositores da Frelimo ameaçados de expulsão do bairro

Members and supporters of the Frelimo party are threatening supporters of other parties not to campaign for the opposition in Inhassoro district, Inhambane province.

According to the Electoral Bulletin of the Center for Public Integrity (CIP), in that part of the country, neighborhood and village leaders and secretaries hold meetings to check who is wearing an opposition T-shirt.

"Anyone found with opposition material is threatened with being expelled from the neighborhood and having to find another neighborhood to live in that belongs to their party," says the CIP.

In fact, young people from Renamo and the MDM have had to hide their T-shirts and propaganda material, leaflets. They have also vandalized campaign materials put up at night.

"One of the young MDM sympathizers had to remove the flags of his party that he had hoisted in the Funhalouro district market, where he sells, after receiving threats from Frelimo," writes CIP.

On the other hand, CIP denounces the fact that the Frelimo party is persecuting and threatening members of the Podemos party in the districts of Inhassoro and Massinga.

"The threats have been made via phone calls and in person at their homes," he said.

In the Gaza town of Chókwe, opposition parties are complaining of political persecution. On Saturday there was a confrontation between Frelimo and Podemos supporters. The confrontation even took place in the presence of local Frelimo party leaders, including party and OJM secretaries from the city and the mayor. The police remained apathetic and tried, without success, to ask the Frelimo members not to continue with the provocation.

In the district of Magude, which borders the districts of Chókwe and Macia, the Frelimo party has been intimidating members of Podemos, a party that has just started its campaign in that district. Frelimo members have been following the Podemos campaign and creating barriers to prevent them from continuing their political activities. (Image: DR)
