UN: 25% of the world's inhabitants are in conflict-affected areas

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that the world today faces the greatest number of violent conflicts since the end of World War II. In all, according to the UN, 25% of the world's inhabitants are in conflict-affected areas.

According to the Secretary-General, the situation in Ukraine is a catastrophe that shakes the foundations of the international order, spreads across borders, and increases the price of food, fuel, and fertilizers, bringing disaster to developing countries.

The UN chief said that financial resources are being redirected to fight hunger and poverty aggravated by the pandemic.

For Guterres, international human rights law is being attacked, and nuclear arsenals expanded.

The Secretary General recalled that criminal and terrorist networks are profiting from divisions and conflicts. And those who pay the highest price for this chaos are the poorest and most needy people.

Last year, conflict and violence forced 84 million people out of their homes.

This year alone, 274 million men, women, and children will need humanitarian aid to survive.

The UN chief said that the international peacebuilding architecture must be prepared to respond to this global scenario.

He again called for the New Agenda for Peace that puts prevention and peacebuilding at the center of actions.
